ESHSS Essay Prize
We also offer a biennial ESHSS Essay Prize.
Winning entries will be awarded the sum of £250 and be considered for publication within the Journal of Scottish Historical Studies.
This prize is open to all postgraduate students and early career researchers. Submissions may focus on any aspect of Scotland’s economic, social, or cultural history. Each entry should be between 8-10,000 words in length, inclusive of footnotes and appendices, and conform to the JSHS general submission guidelines.

the Alastair J. Durie Prize for 2021
We’re excited to announce a new biennial essay prize in memory of Alastair J. Durie, renowned for his work on the history of Scottish textiles and tourism. Winning essays will be awarded £250 and will be considered for publication in the Society’s Journal of Scottish Historical Studies, published by Edinburgh University Press. This is a great opportunity for postgraduates and ECRs alike to contribute their own research to the lineage of economic, cultural, or social history of Scotland in the tradition of the great Alastair Durie.
